Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia–the Foundation for Economic Freedom (FEF) secures one of the three top spots at the 2023 Asia Liberty Awards held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur on 7 September 2023.
The Asia Liberty Awards is awarded by the Atlas Network through the Templeton Freedom Award Prize Program, recognizing think-tanks that have made significant contributions to the advancement of liberal policies and improvement of lives around the globe.
FEF secured a spot as a finalist due to its seven-year effort resulting in the amendment of the Philippines’ Public Service Act (PSA) and the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Renewable Energy Act. Thus, promoting foreign investments in the renewable energy sector, enabling access to energy in previously underserved areas not covered by traditional electricity networks.
Other finalists vying for the award are Bikalpa – An Alternative and Center for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS). The award was presented to Bikalpa – An Alternative for its efforts in bringing widespread attention to inadequate and often corrupt motorbike licensing in Nepal–cutting the license processing time from years into weeks. The other finalist spot was given to CIPS for its efforts in ratifying the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in Indonesia.
Despite only securing one of the top spots, FEF remains steadfast in pushing for its advocacies in the Philippines.
FEF is set to attend the 2023 Templeton Freedom Award (TFA) in November 2023. The TFA is the most prestigious award given by the Atlas Network and supported by the Templeton Religion Trust. FEF has previously won the 2019 TFA for its reforms in removing restrictions on agricultural land patents.
